With spooky season right around the corner, it was time for something fresh and festive to watch. I kept seeing this series, Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen, which I originally thought was written by the Duffer brothers.
I later found out they were executive producers, and the director was a woman named Haley Z. Boston. I originally thought I was getting myself into something similar to Stranger Things or The Boroughs, but I was pleasantly surprised by this show.
Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen is a psychological horror miniseries about a woman who is engaged and visiting her in-laws for the first time, all while having to put on a wedding at their house. It is very eerie and unsettling, with surprisingly beautiful visuals.
It stars Camila Morrone and Adam DiMarco, two actors I had never heard of who did a phenomenal job. The entire cast of characters was great, and the character development really grew on me.
From the start, it gave me an I'm Thinking of Ending Things vibe, where you have no clue what is happening in an odd town where things seem just too quiet. For much of this series, you really don't know who to trust, which is a great way to build and maintain suspense. Speaking of suspense, this is one of the most suspenseful series finales I've seen in a long time. I feel like it was the kind of ending people wanted Stranger Things to have. It was unpredictable, risky, and entertaining.
Overall, this show was more willing to take risks and really dive into the weird and unsettling world it created. It seemed like the writers had a clear direction from the beginning, even though they tried to confuse the audience and add an element of mystery.
I would recommend this series to anyone who enjoys a suspenseful mystery and a strong female lead. Camila Morrone, who plays Rachel, and Gus Birney, who plays Portia, display an impressive range of acting in this series.
If you are looking for something short, noncommittal, and spooky for this Halloween season, then this series should definitely be on your radar this fall!
