If a man has ever done you wrong, Willow Avalon has a song just for you. Her Pink Pocket Pistol Tour made its way to the Crescent Ballroom in Phoenix, Arizona, on Thursday, August 6. She stepped out onto a stage designed to make the audience feel as though they had been invited into a living room in the Deep South, adorned with flickering lamps and a cowhide rug. Then, in classic country music fashion, she painted a scathing portrait of heartbreak and regret with a charming Georgia twang.

The major factor tying all of the artists that performed that night together was unmatched vocal talent. Both of the opening acts, Slater Nalley and Lily Meola, had such beautiful voices that I was awestruck and moved to tears. Willow herself is well known for the almost antique quality of her uniquely beautiful vocals, which sit so perfectly in the backdrop of steel guitars and fiddles, but the stories of the inspiration behind the songs that she told between songs made the show feel as much like a slumber party as it did a performance. In every way, Willow Avalon is a modern-day Dolly Parton. From her fiery, no-nonsense attitude to her musical talent, outfit, and stage setup, you can see a clear and well-executed inspiration.

By the end of the show, it was obvious that Willow Avalon has a big career ahead of her. Her ability to turn heartbreak, humor, and Southern charm into something so intimate made the show feel less like a performance and more like a conversation with an old friend. If the Pink Pocket Pistol Tour proves anything, it’s that Willow Avalon is well on her way to carving out a place for herself among country music’s most memorable storytellers.
