On May 15th, the Crescent Ballroom in downtown Phoenix was transformed into a dusty backroad lined with sunflowers as Kevin Morby played songs off his recently released album, A Little Wide Open.
The opener, Liam Kazar (part of Kevin Morby’s ensemble, who joined him later on stage), had a delightful set of indie songs with just enough jazz influence to spark a little dancing in the crowd. A perfect way to prep the crowd for the journey ahead.
Kevin Morby’s introspective lyrics and indie folk sound have always brought a feeling of nostalgia, but his newest album has somehow dialed into that feeling even more. With production by my personal favorite person in the music industry, Aaron Dessner, and an added soft Americana vibe, this album focuses on a reflection of his past. The juxtaposition of his new life as a parent who has moved away from his hometown is warped in nostalgic feelings that everyone can relate to.
Crescent Ballroom’s cozy, intimate setting, with a seated bleacher section in the back and a long, wide stage, was a perfect fit for the show. Sitting in the back, clapping, swaying and watching the crowd wrapped in the warmth of Kevin’s resonating guitar tones left me just a little misty-eyed.
All in all, a 10/10 experience.
