Last weekend, I got to experience Norwegian black metal group Witch Club Satan in person for the first time at their show at Sonia in Cambridge, Massachusetts. I was already excited and ready for an intensely flavorful performance, and I was absolutely not disappointed.
Upon arriving, I saw so many fans dressed in unique outfits and incredibly impressive makeup. The show opened with the emotive and ethereal Penelope Trappes. She delivered an atmospheric set, playing both the keyboard and guitar alongside her vocals. The tones and energy were entrancing and beautiful, especially with the minimal lighting.
Of course, that set the stage for the uniquely costumed Witch Club Satan to make a haunting entrance, walking slowly through the audience and interacting with people before reaching their instruments. They introduced themselves and prepared the audience to follow them on a journey through the rest of the night. What a journey it was!
Through several striking costume changes, the witches delivered a set filled with rage, expression, and a strong political voice while connecting deeply with their fans in this intimate venue. The expressive nature of the performance made every song hit hard and feel impactful. I especially loved watching the members join the audience, playing guitars right in fans' faces, walking around while shouting along with them, and even crowd surfing.
It was a show I'm grateful I could attend and one that I hope to experience again.
