As many of you are aware by now, on June 14, 2026, we lost a truly legendary musical icon, Oliver Tree Nickell, also known as Oliver Tree. If you have never heard of Oliver Tree, he was a quirky, bowl cut-wearing, scooter-riding musician, producer, director, and all-around unique artist. His most popular songs include tracks like "Life Goes On" and "Miss You," as well as OG favorites like "Alien Boy."
I encourage you to check out not only his music, but also his music videos, interviews, and podcasts. There is something truly inspirational about an artist who so fully lives and breathes the creations they make, and Oliver shaped his path with a passion and dedication to his craft.
Oliver was a kid from Santa Cruz who dedicated his life to music at a young age, taking piano lessons at three, doing DJ sets throughout his teens, and opening for Skrillex at age 17. Oliver was a force of nature. He had released earlier albums such as Splitting Branches as a teenager. (It is amazing to listen to today and hear his early roots and style begin to take shape.) He believed in embracing weirdness and insecurities. He leaned into looking weirder and embraced being "ugly" through his outfit choices and creative style. He stood by the phrase "Ugly Is Beautiful," which became the title of his most popular album, and constantly encouraged people to embrace their insecurities. He created an entire world of characters through this motto, and you could never quite tell what was a joke and what wasn't during his media appearances.
Oliver Tree was in every corner of the internet, whether you knew his name or not. If you were online, especially during 2020, there was a good chance you had seen his face. Whether it was his bowl cut and kids' sunglasses while riding a Razor scooter or his long blond mullet and blue cowboy hat, Oliver always had a talent for knowing how to market himself. He urged artists to embrace their creative ownership. People who collaborated with Oliver often described him as a mastermind of constant ideas and creativity. He self-directed and produced all of his music and music videos and even performed many of his own stunts. Oliver was bold and unapologetically himself. He knew that trying to lean into "looking good" and "being cool" wasn't enough. Talent alone wouldn't carry him.
It is impossible to cover the number of strange and beautifully unusual things he accomplished throughout his career. I can't think of anyone else who lived life to the fullest quite like Oliver Tree. Many fans have never grieved the loss of a celebrity like this before. He was someone full of youth and whimsy whose legacy will truly feel immortal through the gift he left the world. Oliver Tree accomplished more in his 32 years than many people do in a lifetime. He was dedicated to traveling the world and sharing his music with it. Right before he passed, he was on his world tour supporting his new album, Love You Badly Hate You Madly. He released it independently through Alien Boy Records after a long battle with Atlantic Records. Oliver will continue to have an everlasting impact on the world, and many people would agree that he truly changed it in his own way. He showed us that life is too short and that we have to live every day like it's our last. He taught us to believe in ourselves and our art, and not let anything stop us from expressing ourselves.
His final wish was to give back to artists by creating the "Dr. Oliver Tree's Extremely Epic Art Grant for Baby Geniuses" to support the creation of music, film, installation, and performance art. You can donate using the link below. They say the good die young, but Oliver Tree used his art to ensure that the things we lose can live forever.
