As someone who fell in love with The Devil Wears Prada at the ripe age of 10 years old, I’ve been watching the original film for years. The announcement of a sequel was unexpected, but also completely expected. The original film is an iconic staple of pop culture, making itself known in so many different ways.

With the release of the second film, I was excited but also a little hesitant. I had seen the trailers and was eager to see what the movie would bring. The trailers felt like they were giving nothing away.

Watching the film, there were some scenes that felt emotional and accurate. For example, without spoiling anything, there’s a scene that addresses the usage of AI in the journalism and fashion industries and how it’s continuing to grow.

Other scenes, however, were filled with iconic one-liners. Stanley Tucci’s "Well, look what TJMaxx dragged in" was one of my personal favorites.

The film is filled with nostalgic elements, but it also leans a little too far into the nostalgic bits at some points. The nostalgia and comedic elements were what pulled the film together. There were bits of it that also felt modern and trendy, for example, the increased focus on brands like Dior and Versace. These weren’t mentioned in the first film, even though they were bigger brands and iconic houses of fashion. That said, there was a lot of product placement in the film as well, something I’m starting to really understand in films, but not love.

But the bit that stood out to me wasn’t the one-liners or the emotional scenes, it was the actors. With the core four reunited in this film, they all fall back into their roles perfectly. Meryl Streep is famous for not partaking in sequels for her films, making The Devil Wears Prada 2 her second sequel.

Tucci falls effortlessly back into the role of Nigel, taking the one-liners and comedic relief back to 2006, and Anne Hathaway falls back into the nervously excited, yet passionate Andrea Sachs with ease.

Emily Blunt has always been my favorite of the four, and I was kind of surprised that she didn’t have more screen time throughout the film. But alas, it felt like Blunt had the least amount of screen time. Even with limited screen time, Blunt brought Emily Charlton back to her witty, mean girl-esque roots.

A new addition this time around was Simone Ashley, and she fits into the group like she was always meant to be there. There was lots of back and forth on the role that her character, Amari, would play in the film. Amari brings Miranda into the modern world, where there are things you can and cannot say, making her role all the better.

Ashley was the perfect addition to the cast.

The Devil Wears Prada 2 has easily become one of my favorite movies so far this year. I’d give this film 8.5/10 red heels! 👠
