Weakened Friends brought a kind of restless, emotional electricity to Minneapolis, the kind that doesn’t just fill a room but lingers in your chest long after the set ends.
At Varsity Theater, it was clear early on that this wasn’t going to be a slow-building night. The venue filled up fast, long before the headliner The Wonder Years took the stage. A sold-out crowd packed in early, and instead of waiting around, they were met with an opener that made showing up on time feel like the right call.
Weakened Friends kicked things off with “NPC,” immediately setting the tone with fuzzy guitars and a punch of energy that cut through the room. That first track carried an unpolished urgency that kicked the show into a powerful start. Their sound, gritty, melodic, and just a little jagged at the edges, translated effortlessly in a live setting, where distortion hit harder and the quiet moments felt even more exposed.
Sonia Sturino’s presence anchored the performance in a way that felt both commanding and deeply human. Her vocals carried that signature push and pull: vulnerable one second, biting the next. It’s that contrast that makes their music resonate, and live, it hits even sharper. There’s no hiding behind production here, just raw delivery and honest execution.
The band’s chemistry stood out, too. There was a sense that the band was just having fun together, playing their songs, feeding off each other’s energy and enjoying the moment. It made the performance feel lively, authentic, and contagious for the crowd. Every transition felt intentional but never over-rehearsed, giving the set a loose, almost cathartic flow. Songs built slowly before crashing into heavier, fuzz-drenched choruses, and the crowd responded in kind, leaning in during softer moments and letting go when the volume surged.
What made the night memorable wasn’t just the sound, but the feeling. There’s something about Weakened Friends that doesn’t try to resolve the tension in their music. It sits with it, lets it breathe. And in a packed room full of early arrivals who quickly became fans, that translated into a shared experience rather than just a performance.
By the end of the set, it didn’t feel like the band had wrapped anything up neatly. Instead, they left the room suspended in that same emotional space they built from the first note: messy, loud, and undeniably real. With the tour winding down, this sold-out Minneapolis stop feels like just the beginning. Keep your eye on Weakened Friends to see where they’ll go next.
