Purity Ring opens the door to a fresh blend of multi-genre pop and house music. The Canadian duo, made up of Megan James and Corin Roddick, return with their fourth full-length album, Purity Ring, long awaited after their 2020 release Womb.
The album’s first two tracks, “many lives” and “part ii,” were released together alongside a video directed by creative director Mike Sunday, who drew inspiration from video games like NieR: Automata and Final Fantasy X. Those influences are clearly reflected in the visual world of the music video.
Throughout the album, Purity Ring introduces instrumental elements not previously explored in their earlier releases. Tracks like “iamanocean” lean into a more acoustic sound and should not be overlooked. Lyrically, the duo plays with the listener’s mind, blending heavy synth melodies, breakbeats, and subtle autotune that complements Megan’s signature childlike vocals.
Overall, Purity Ring is a synth-pop masterpiece and an album well worth a full listen.
