A Little Too Haunted is the perfect read for anyone who loves all things spooky without wanting something genuinely terrifying. I actually had to put this book down for a while because I was in the middle of moving, but now that I've finally finished it, I can confidently say it was worth the wait.
I picked this up for both my Summerween-a-thon and Haunted Mansion Vibes reading lists on Pagebound, and it also happened to be a Pride Month read. Safe to say this book checked a lot of boxes for me.
One thing I especially love is seeing young queer characters simply get to exist and thrive. Luna, our main character, is being raised by two moms in Cleveland, Ohio (shoutout to my city—CLE 'til I die, baby!), and that representation felt incredibly refreshing. What I adored most was the message that community can be built wherever you go. As someone who grew up queer in Ohio with very limited internet access, that really resonated with me. It's a wonderful reminder that your people are out there—whether they're next door, across the country, or even across the fabric of reality.
This ended up being a five-star read for me. The opening intrigued me, but I wasn't immediately hooked. Then Chapters 2 and 3 rolled around, and suddenly I couldn't stop reading. Winans crafts such an immersive world that I genuinely felt like I was there. Maybe that's because I'm already familiar with some of Cleveland's ghost stories and live only about thirty minutes from where the book takes place, but the setting felt incredibly vivid.
The story kept throwing twists and turns my way, and every time I thought I knew where things were headed, it surprised me. By the time I reached the end, Luna's story felt complete. Everything wrapped up in a satisfying way without overstaying its welcome, and that's exactly the kind of ending I love.
TL;DR: Queer kids rock. Haunted houses rock. This book rocks. Five stars.
